I love working for a church. The phone calls alone make for wonderful fodder.
Caller: Is the pastor available?
I could have answered this in so many different ways but my response was....
Me: I'm sorry, he's out of the office. Is there something I can help you with?
Caller: Not unless you can authorize assistance.
Me: Ummmm, spriritual or financial?
Caller: I need food assistance.
Of course you do!
Me: I'm sorry, we don't offer that. We donate our funds to Interfaith Response.
Caller: They're not open today!
Me: Yes, I know. You could try Care & Share House......
Caller: (angry) I don't DO food pantries! What do you expect? You church's are all the same. You lead people on, you offer nothing...what do you expect when you get to heaven?
Oh good golly, as you know, I would have had a very simple response to this comment but I chose to say....
Me: Sir, I'm not going to get into a spiritual debate with you.
Caller: Why? Because you're Jewish?
HUH?
Me: I'm sorry? Who do you think you called?
Caller: Isn't this a synagogue?
Me: Sir, you called me. Are you just going through the phone book?
Caller: Oh, sorry.
