What's in a name?
I've been employed at the same place for 4+ years now and you would think everybody would know my name. Doesn't that phrase make you want to sing the "Cheers" song? "Sometimes you want to go/ Where everybody knows your name, / and they're always glad you came. /You wanna be where you can see, /our troubles are all the same /You wanna be where everybody knows Your name."
For pity's sake, I stand up in front of them almost every Sunday and get a "Good Morning, Amy".
So why is it one gentleman calls me "Kim"?
Do I look like a Kim? He knew my name before a month ago, so did he have some sort of mental break and forgot my real name so he's making one up? Or does he just prefer to call me Kim?
This has happened every Sunday for the last month. Do you think I could figure out how to correct him without embarassing him? No. But I thought today, it would happen. He was sitting at a table with other folks, his wife included, and he said, "Good Morning Kim!" He says it so enthusiastically, too. So I thought, "His wife will correct him for sure & I won't have to!". For God's sake, no she didn't!!
Now I worry, everybody in the congregation is going to start calling me Kim. If my parents wanted me to be Kim, they would have named me Kim.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

No we couldn't call you Kim because I have a cousin named Kim and that just wouldn't do.
You're going to have to ask his wife what's going on.
