The town where I spent 3 or 4 formative teenage years, and where my parents still live, apparently has a feral cat problem. It's a town of 900 people. With a feral cat problem. I wonder, how many feral cats does it take to create a problem? It's all great comic relief for my cousin and me. Provides hours of laughter.
I'm not sure I should be laughing.
I walked out to my garage in the pre-dawn hour of 6:00am to retrieve the two remaining cases of soda still in my trunk from Thursday's trip to Walmart. As I rounded the corner, I stopped. There were two dark lumps laying not far from my garage entrance. They were starting at me. My first thought was, "Oh shit, skunks." I've always had a fear of being sprayed by a skunk. Who wants to de-smell, sitting in a tub of tomato soup?
As they stood to stare at me, I realized they were two cats. One gray & black tiger striped with white on its chest. My second thought was, "Oh shit, how did Dale get out?" But I realized quickly, no way would Dale be laying with another cat. The second one was long-haired & black. Would probably be beautiful if it wasn't outside.
I didn't know what to do so we stood there staring at each other for a minute or two, then they started walking away....in the same direction I was going to be walking, laden down with two cases of soda. As I got closer, they scampered away under the parked cars.
I wonder if the person who coordinates my hometown's feral cat program would mind setting some traps around here? I also wonder, what were two cats doing, together, in the parking lot? Did I walk past some dead animal they were gnawing on? I wonder, too, whose cat's are they because they certainly didn't look homeless by any means?
I'll create my own program and call it High Heel to the Feral Cats. PETA will probably be knocking down my door soon.
