"At the back end of the Daylight Saving scheme, I detect the bony, blue-fingered hand of Puritanism, eager to push people into bed earlier, to make them healthy, wealthy, and wise in spite of themselves." -Robertson Davies

Daylight saving time is fast approaching! Spring forward at 2AM on Sunday, March 11, 2012.

I hate daylight saving time and I constantly wonder why the hell we do it. I understand why it was first implemented....so farmers could have more daylight & time in the fields. That's great, but do we need that in this day & age? Farmers are in the fields regardless of daylight-- they have lights on their combines & tractors now! It isn't some old dude, plowing a row with a mule anymore.

The Washington Post gives these "benefits" to daylight saving time:
Proponents say that it provides more time in the day for exercise and socialization, which makes people happier. Some say that the extra hour increases visibility and helps decrease traffic accidents, while others say that the lost hour of sleep can actually increase accidents. The extra daylight also may save energy, decreasing the amont of time that we use lights and appliances — according to some. Other studies have found that DST has had little effect on energy consumption. The tourism industry believes that DST gives them a boost, and a founder of the Daylight Saving Coalition once testified in Congress that fast-food restaurants sell more french fries in DST.
Well, as long as the fast-food restaurants are able to sell more french-fries, then I'm all for it!  *eye roll*

Our custodian at work is such a forward-thinker, he's already adjusted two of the clocks in the church. I keep walking past one, glancing at the clock, and thinking, "Yeah, it's 3:00! Only one more hour!" and then I realize, "Shit, it's only 2....."  Major disappointment.

I'll spring forward with the rest of you, but I'm not going to like it. Especially at 5:45AM (actually 4:45AM) Sunday morning. Not liking it at all.
