I don't know many people who are awake as early as I am, except my parents, who apparently never sleep. My dad grew up on the farm and was a farmer through my childhood, so he's probably programmed to wake up early by his internal clock-- "Time to feed the chickens. Better check the pipes and make sure they haven't frozen". Even though he's not a farmer now....he's a pastor. I suppose even pastor's have to wake up early. Maybe it's his time to be with God....it's certainly quiet enough at 5:00a.m. to listen for God's word.
And Mom. I don't think the woman has slept a full 8 hours ever. I remember trying to sneak out as a teenager (the key word there is trying). The woman always caught me. Of course, I probably wasn't very good at being quiet. And I think all mom's have a sixth sense and know when their children are up to no good. And I was always up to no good.
So, other than my parents, who live 45 miles away, there aren't many people in my circle who are up before dawn. And I think that's why I love it so much. I live in an apartment complex and once 7:00am hits, the doors start slamming, people start yelling at their damn dogs to "go pee, go pee now" like the dog understands what the heck they're saying, and there's just a general sense of noise.
If I'm up at 5:00a.m. that gives me 2 full hours of peace & quiet. Just me....and sometimes the cats, though most times, they're still curled up in a ball on the bed. This time of year, you would think it would be harder to wake up early because it's so dark out....the sun hasn't even thought about making an appearance yet, but I'm programmed. And I love it.
So, which are you? Early bird or Night owl? And what are the perks?

Well, you know I'm up early most days but not at 5 anymore. Usually 5:30 or 6 to walk Murph. You're right it is quiet and I can talk with God or he can talk to me; it's most often times both.
And I blame my Dad for having this early morning thing going. He always, and I mean always, was up at 5 and woke us at 5:30 to do chores.
Actually it's the best time of the day. The morning sky is beautiful, the birds are just waking, the air is damp and cool and smells so good, even the skunk smell I like. There's something wrong with me I know but that's the way I'm put together and I don't think it can be changed without surgery or drugs.
Can one be a night owl and an early bird? Granted I work overnights every other week so I'm up all night then, but even my off weeks are a bit... off. I fall asleep on my living room floor most nights around 8 or 9 and wake up at midnight or so and just stay up all night. I love looking at the morning fog and watching the city start to wake up as the sun begins to rise.
Of course the best part is... no people are around to mess it up yet. For a short time everything I see is peaceful and silent and beautiful.
