"When I no longer thrill to the first snow of the season, I'll know I'm growing old." -Lady Bird Johnson

Yesterday was our first significant snow fall of the season. As far as I was concerned, it was a perfect day. I woke up at 5:00AM, hoping the snow had already fallen.  On days when I have to go to work, I want to sleep in. On my days off, I practically leap out of bed to start the day. Not too difficult to figure out why. Yesterday, I leapt....and was disappointed that the snow hadn't started falling yet.  I'm like a little kid when it comes to snow. The more, the better. In fact, I wish we'd get a rip-roarin' storm that would snow us in for a day or two.

Since the roads were clear, I went to my local convenience store to rent some movies. Then did my laundry. I had everything done that needed to be done by 7AM.  That's the problem with waking up early. What the hell do you do with all those free hours? I watched "Cars 2" and "Scream 4".  Both good enough for a snowy Saturday.

The snow started falling around 11AM and only stopped periodically throughout the day & night. It was beautiful to watch it falling on my twinkle-lighted-garland wrapped around my balcony railing.  The reason yesterday was so perfect was that I didn't have to go anywhere.  I never even left my apartment. I just sat in my cozy pj's, wrapped in my afghan, sipping coffee, eating cinnamon rolls (an entire tube- yes, I'm a pig)watching movies & the snow fall.  Significant snowfall gives all of us a reprieve from 10 minutes of Husker football news coverage every night. Instead, we get 10 minutes of snow coverage. It gives everyone an excuse to stay indoors and not run any errands.

Bliss.

I did wonder, though, how such simple things in life can bring me such pleasure.....and is that a good thing or a bad thing? Watching candles flicker. Scents of winter. Snow. Cuddling with the cats. Sipping coffee. Naps. Reading a good book. Can these things sustain? Will the pleasure they bring me now, forever bring me pleasure? I sure hope so.

As Lady Bird Johnson said, I'll know I'm old when I don't get excited about the first snow. I'm not there yet.
