"I'm tired of this back-slapping 'Isn't humanity neat?' bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are.”—Bill Hicks

Have you heard the story about the Malaysian model set to be caned (following the Ramadan fast) for drinking beer? Read it here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32534618/ns/world_news-asiapacific/. I have mixed feelings about this. My first thought was, "Thank God I live in a country with so many freedoms". I was appalled....initially. Then I thought, dripping sarcasm, "Thank God I live in a country where you can drink all you want and harm others in the aftermath; dress like you're a street-walker looking for a pay-day; speak crudely & disrespectfully in public; let your children run wild with no supervision or discipline; sleep with whoever you want whenever & wherever you want."

The model, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, says she wants to be caned because she "respects the law". That, to me, is courageous. That is obedience. That is trust in your country, your religion, your law. I admire that.

I don't know the laws in Malaysia. I don't know the Muslim religion. But I respect it.

I understand respect, but is it a fabrication to say she respects Muslim law if she drank beer in the first place?

Good point. But don't we all break rules every now & then, for whatever reason/intention....like taking paper from work, or not using our turn signals, or anything seemingly minor? And if we were punished for breaking even those minor rules, we'd be much less likely to break them again..or break an even bigger rule. Thinking of Christianity. The main premise if forgiveness. I'm not the most forgiving person, but maybe I'd try harder at it if I were caned 6 times for being a beeeyotch. You know?
