"I once bought my kids a set of batteries for Christmas with a note on it saying, toys not included." ~Bernard Manning

This may be a Reverb 10 prompt, but not yet, so I'm jumping ahead because I have little patience.

What is one gift that you cherish the most or that has lasted the longest?

I say  the question that way because there have been gifts that I haven't cherished, but have which lasted longest, and so, have thus, become cherished.

I was so upset when my parents gave me an extra large beach towel for my 16th birthday. I realize now, my parents were paying for me to live with another family, in another town, to get a better education and environment. So that should have been their gift. But it didn't change the fact that they gave me a "beach towel" for my birthday. Little did I know at the time that I would have that beach towel, even now. Granted, it has teddy bears on it, but it's still big and covers me as I walk to my apartment.  Who cares what's on it? So, thank you.

The other gift I'm thankful for that I just didn't think about is my "wrap". One of my brothers or my parents bought me this wrap a few years ago.  I didn't think much about it, other than I wanted it "at the time".  I didn't think it would "last". It has. I'm wearing it now. It probably helps that I keep my apartment at a balmy 65 degrees. It has pockets, which I use to warm my hands. It might become obsolete as soon as I turn up the heat in my apartment. I don't see that happening.

The other gift is one not asked for.  A professor of mine gave me an angel nightlight.  I've had it for at least 8 years. It still lights my bathroom. And I am most thankful for that.

See, it's the gifts that we don't necessarily know we need that are the most fruitful.
